What is irish flying columns?

Irish flying columns were military units during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921). They were created as a tactic of guerrilla warfare to increase mobility and evade the superior firepower of the British forces.

The flying columns varied in size but typically consisted of about 50-100 IRA (Irish Republican Army) soldiers. The column would move quickly from one area to another, conducting surprise attacks on British forces and installations.

The columns were highly effective and caused significant disruptions to the British military's operations. However, the British responded with increased surveillance and intelligence gathering, making it difficult for the flying columns to maintain secrecy and mobility.

The flying columns played a significant role in the eventual success of the Irish War of Independence, leading to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
